4.0 out of 5 stars amazingly airtight for not having a rubber seal, October 28, 2011

Other reviewers are right, the plastic is thin and there is no grommet hole but I have a 1/2 inch bit and took me all of 2 seconds to remedy that (I prefer 1/2 over 5/8 simply for a tighter grommet fit!).

For a lid that has no rubber or neoprene seal, its amazingly air tight (not 100% but darn close).

Grommets are fifty cents a piece at my local brew shop and i always have several laying around, so not a big deal for me there either.

For the money, I believe its a good buy, its fairly large capacity and easily replaced if it doesn't last long, so go for it!

I have fermented liquid at least 5 times in this bucket with no issue. I agree it is not as sturdy as it appears on the picture but I have had no issues and I have carried it from the kitchen to the wine room several times. I did end up buying a grommet at a brew shop for .59 and drilling a hole in the lid for it and now it has a nice grommeted hole in the lid for a bubbler. I drilled in the middle though, don't do that. When you are carrying it you have to remove or push the bubbler down so it doesn't interfere with the handle, MY BAD! I will be ordering another one and I will be drilling another hole but off to towards the edge.I purchased a bottling spigot for it but am wondering if it can take that. If I do it I will leave another reply.

I use this in my bathroom. It stores exactly 60 pounds of Epsom salts, plus a small plastic scoop. It fits under the sink out of the way, yet is easily accessible when I need it. Keeps the salts airtight, clean and dry, without any hassle, without undue expense.

In brief, it does everything I want and need it to do, without providing anything extra that I don't want or need. It's ideal for my purposes.

It seems to be medium-duty - neither flimsy nor "military grade", although I don't intend to move it about very much in order to test its durability. Looks relatively sharp as well - in a modern, generic, minimalist kind of way.
